Try having your idea first and THEN picking up the camera.

look at some adverts on tv and try
to copy them, give you a good way
of trying out all the 'technical'
ways of using the camera, before
you've even done one of them you'll
have an idea...

this may be obvious, but put tape in, press record, have a bit of paper, and connect your tv to the camera...
now log every shot you take of the same thing, eg, dog scratching ass, friend picking nose... and work through every possible setup of the camera, go through every menu, with every change look at how it appears on the screen, log it on the bit of paper say if its good, makes and what effect it has on a tv monitor, try another one, look at tv, log it.... etc etc - keep this tape and this bit of paper very safe and use it when you storyboard your next movie like Andy said by the time youve done this you will have a good idea and you will know how to use your tool wisely
hope this did not sound patronising

I got a video camera for Christmas, and as soon as I pick the thing up....lo and behold, I GO COMPLETELY BLANK! It is like I am so excited about having the camera I can't think of any ideas of things to make. I want to make something all by myself to "break in" the camera. If anyone can help me, please do.
Thanx

This is about par for attempting to do something you are naturally good at.
If you think to yourself, If I had a camera I'd ...............
then when you get one you can not think of f**K all to do with the damn thing you are possibly well on your way to being everyones worst nightmare.
USE The basics and tape everything.

Sorry for sounding like a jackaXX, I'm just trying to come up with an idea for a short film to make with one male character.

One male character ay !
Easy shit dude ! Do you ever do things by yourself. I mean e.g. going to the Post Office, going to get some food at the 7 Eleven or picking up something from your nieghbor. There's 3 ideas. Now just add a twist to one of them e.g. going to the Post Office you see a "hit and run" and you end up helping the victim by saving her life. She's beautiful and you are instantly atracted. You get the idea.

Do a short about an author with a deadline. The catch is that the character has attention-deficit-disord... hey, what's that?!!
